Frequently Asked Questions
What dictionary does Word Unscrambler use?
We check words against the public-domain ENABLE word list, a widely used English lexicon for word games with about 173,000 words. Definitions come from Princeton University’s WordNet. Note that official tournament lists such as NWL (US/Canada) and CSW (UK) differ slightly and are not yet supported.
Is a particular word valid?
Search the word in the tool or open its page under /dictionary. If it appears, it is in the ENABLE list we use. Because different word games use different official dictionaries, a word valid here may not be accepted in every game, and vice versa.
What is the difference between the unscrambler and the anagram solver?
The word unscrambler finds every word you can make from your letters, including shorter words. The anagram solver only returns words that use all of your letters at once (true anagrams of the same length).
How do I use a blank or wildcard tile?
Type a question mark (?) or asterisk (*) in place of a blank tile. Each wildcard can stand in for any single letter, just like a blank tile in Scrabble or Words With Friends.
How are the points calculated?
Each letter is given its standard tile value. Use the Scrabble / Words With Friends toggle to score with that game’s values — they differ, so the best-scoring word can change between games.
Is Word Unscrambler free?
Yes. All tools are free to use with no sign-up required. The site is an independent helper and is not affiliated with Scrabble, Mattel, Hasbro, Zynga, or Words With Friends.
Do you store the letters I search?
No. The tools run in your browser and your letters are not sent to or stored on our servers. See our Privacy Policy for details.
